All I am doing is going under explore and taking the check box off folders to
bring up the task list. There is no apply. Are you talking about the folder
option folder? If so I do not know which one to check to default to the task
view. Thanks

Try this...open a folder and go to...
Tools / Folder Options / General tab...
tick..."Show Common Tasks In Folders"/
Apply / OK.

Thanks John. I did go to the folder tab I have no general tab but I did check
the button and hit apply but I still get the folders instead of the tasks. I
can chnage it by unclicking the folder button. Maybe my views or defaluts are
messed up. I had someone come over to help me work on my computer and they
like folder views. I never saw the folders on this screen before.

Ok...try this, maybe it will restore the option:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

Probably a waste of time...but try the following command:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

And this one:

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
(yes, the space after the 2 and the space
after the i is required)

Press...Enter...

You should see a dialog box that says:
DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shimgvw.dll succeeded

Or...try this:

Using Regmon:
Common Tasks Don't Match Folder Type:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_common_tasks.htm

And this:

(291257) Picture Tasks Options Are Not
Available in a Folder That Contains Images
