That is not a fair comparison. That is liek comparing apples and
oranges. Both are fruit, both are edible, but only one has the vitamin
C you need.

GIMP is a full blown graphics program, Picasa is geared more towards
minor photo editing and photo sorting / viewing.

Different uses....

One is an image editor (gimp)
and the other is more of a photo-indexer

Two very different sets of functions. Picasa's strength is in
organizing photos & and simplifying a small set of common photo
conversions (eg removing red-eye).

Gimp is a much much fuller image-editing s/w (almost) on a par w/the
adobe offerings.

Picasa is free photo software from Google.

This version is Linux compatible. Picasa won't delete your pictures
or put them online without your permission.

Total size: 24MB. Picasa software (9MB), Wine (12MB)
and Gecko engine(3MB)

Is this really a Linux version
if it's required to run under Wine ????

I saw that too... it seems they had to take the wine path, instead of
rebuilding the whole app...

perhaps if they see people showing interest they will make a
100% pure linux version

What I would like to see is a Google Desktop for Linux.
It is one of the Windows applications I miss. Most "desktop search"
programs for Linux have not worked for me. (Beagle is too damn slow and
Kat crashed whenever I tried to use it)
