Hi,

I have a new installation of Win2003 Standard running on a new server.
4GB of physical memory is installed. The BIOS reports 4GB of total physical
memory. The Windows System Information applet reports 4GB of total physical
memory. The Task Manager, on the other hand, is reporting only 3.4gb of
total physical memory. What is causing the inconsistency?

Let me guess. This is a server class machine with RAID controller or
other high end controller that does large data transfer. It is normal
for such a controller to reserve 100 - 400 meg of memory depending on
its function. System is working correctly.

Yes! It has a Perc RAID controller.... but the controller already has
256mb of memory built in. I'm surprised that it needs to reserve more.

I have a BUNCH of dell servers with the PERC 2,3,4 and none of them
"reserve" any main memory for their own use - simple RAID 5 and Mirror
modes in use on all of them.

It does not occur on every configuration but I have seen this many
times. Any time I have ever seen an odd amount of memory "missing" on a
system like that it has always been because motherboard or add-on
controller was reserving it. They do it even if they have cache on the
board. Almost all Compaqs do it and specific versions of other system do
also.
