Photostory: cannot save project

G

Guest

When I try to save my project in PhotoStory 3.0, I receive an error message
that tells me it cannot be saved and the files may be corrupted. I have tried
to save a very small project with only a few pictures and I have the same
problem.

I used to have the trial version of Digital Library new starter edition 2006
but it has now expired. I have tried to un-install and then re-install
PhotoStory 3.0 but this has not fixed it. I am an Adminstrator on the machine.

Any clue?...

Thanks!

What format are the images saved in?

Has the program saved successfully on
previous projects?

Have you installed / uninstalled / updated
anything recently?

I don't have a solution based on the limited
info you posted but maybe you can find
some help at the following sites:

The pictures are in jpg format.

Yes, it saved fine before. The change that happened is that I had a trial
version of Digital Library installed and it has expired. I suspect this might
be linked to the program expiring - but when I tried to un-install it, and
then re-install just the PhotoStory part from the Genuine Advantage site, I
still get this problem.

I suspect it migth be a case of the Digital Image program not uninstalling
completely but I am not confident "hacking" the registry to remove everything.

I have looked around on forums and web sites but not found any solution. I
did see somebody with what looked like a similar problem but there was no
solution proposed.

Do you happen to have some image files
from a different source you could try in
PhotoStory 3...just to see if the save issue
is the same?

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately I have not installed IE7 so this can't be the problem.

I have tried creating a new project from scratch with only one picture and
have tried multiple formats - jpeg, bmp, tif - but no luck. I get the exact
same error message telling me that some files might be corrupted and I should
re-install PhotoStory and save the project again. Only I have tried to
uninstall and re-install PhotoStory multiple times now but it did not fix the
problem.

I did not mention but I can actually generate the wmv file no problem. So I
can actually make the photo story and view it, I just can't save the project
- so if I ever wanted to come back to it later and make changes, I would have
to start from scratch.

I can't help but think it has something to do with the trial version of
Digital Image Library new starter 2006 that I had installed and which has now
expired. Maybe what has happened is that after the expiry date, PhotoStory
has limited functionality - and maybe one of the limited functionality is
that you can't save your project any longer.
I have un-installed Digital Image Library and I have then re-installed
PhotoStory stand along from the Genuine Advantage site - but somehow maybe it
still thinks it is the trial version. There may be some keys in the registry
that need to be removed?

Any clue? Thank you for any help or pointer you can provide. I have already
searched the web thoroughly for this, including blogs and the MS knowledge
base - with no luck.

Thanks!

Anything is certainly possible but I don't think
Digital Image Library is at the heart of this issue.

Just wondering if you tried doing a system
restore to a time before the issue began?

Just to clarify....you can save the finished .wmv
movie file successfully?

As for saving the "Project" which would be a
..wp3 file...there is a "Save Project" button on
every screen in PS3...are you saying you can
open the program and go to...

Begin a new story / Next / Import Pictures button /
Browse to and select one image / left click the
"Save Project" button and immediately receive
an error? If this is not your scenario...please
post the steps you have to exercise before you
receive the error.

yes, this is exactly the scenario.

I have not tried restoring the system to a previous state - to be honest I
am not even sure the system is configured to setup restore points along the
way though I will have a look in case it has prepared restore points by
default (I never went to set this up)

To clarify: yes I can save the finished .wmv file successfully. I can see
the "save project" button at every step of the way as I work my way through
the various screens of PhotoStory, but regardless of when I try to click it,
whether it is immediately afer importing the image, or whether it is on the
next screen, or the one after, etc. I receive the same error.

Thanks again for trying to help - much appreciated (you MVP guys rock!! :))

Thanks for the info...a system restore may
be worth a try. I'm only guessing because
I have not seen this issue with PS3 before.

(306084) HOW TO: Restore the Operating
System to a Previous State in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306084

And you might try the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility to remove any Windows
Installer registry settings that may be
left over from Digital Image Starter Edition.

CleanUp Utility

Good luck...

What happend? Did you manage to solve this problem? I have exactly the
same
problem. Tried to reinstall several times. It seems to me the Install
file looks a
little odd and it does not start at once when clicking the buttom. I
have removed the
Install file and tried two different languages, I have made a system
restore to a previus date,
I have also tried the registry clean up, and also tried to download
the Install fiel without Norton Firewall and
Norton Interned Security active, all without any luck.

Had a similar problem when I first used Photostory. If iremember, it had
something to do with some codecs installed by another program. There is a
free program that will list all the codecs on your machine. You then go to
the folder they reside in and change the name of each one or all and try to
save. Papa John describes the routine on his site. Sorry I don't have the
info right now and have to leave, so I can't look it up right now. Check it
out at papajohn.org I think. Or just do a search for PapaJohn..Got to go...
