photosmart 1115 printer diagnostics and glossy photos

As part of the diagnostics on my photosmart 1115, the printer does a
ladder test on the color cartridge, presumably to test each nozzle
individually. I always notice a few of the lines in the ladder
missing. However, all my color output looks perfect including my high
resolution photos on glossy paper.

I'm wondering if the printer also "knows" some of the nozzles aren't
alive and compensates for it.

Does anybody know if this is true?

It's really only at lower resolutions that you will notice the
missing bits of the picture, the printer layers up over the previous
bit of the printout at high resolutions, well that my crude way of
describing it.
