Gimp is is very good, also Paint.net all freeware.

In win98se gimp is not stable, but gimpshop is.
Paint Shop Pro is not, if you can find it Paint Shop Pro 7 is very easy
to learn just by doing.

A beginner in painting with a computer is probably better served by a
simpler program than photoshop. After having learned to use simple
programs it is a lot easier to learn to use more complex programs.

Start with Pixia, for example, very small, very quick, and very capable
for its size.
Artweaver is also nice. Deep Paint is fascinating with its wet oil
colors, but it has a tendency to freeze when trying to set up some
things, you have to save often and learn what to avoid in the program.
Gimpshop is some kind of Gimp package.
My friend CoMa is a excellent artist (CoMa Freeware Links- Google it).
He uses Paint Shop Pro, so before you say, no-way Photoshop is so much
better check out his art.
Its awesome.

Nice images.

I watched a program yesterday about Tony Bage who invented the "true
fire" painting style of motorcycles, helicopters, cars, etc..
http://members.shaw.ca/tbage/

I have been trying to paint a camp fire in a dark moonlit landscape
lately, so I liked seeing how he paints fire and flames.

He uses a template, like these:
http://www.dixieart.com/Freehand_True_Fire_Templates_by_Mike_Lavallee.html
the templates in that page are double, cut after the line and get two
templates from each picture.

He used the template to spray along a curve in a very nice way.
It made me wonder what paint programs we can use such templates in.
The template is rotated and moved to get the right curve in a certain
position over the painting, spray along a part of the template for nice
curves.

Are there readymade templates like these, with a bunch of nice curves,
for some paint program? In what program is it easy to handle such
templates?

The owner of a helicopter painted by Tony Bage landed outside a
shopping center, the owner went into the mall but walked out again when
he heard police sirens, and saw ambulance, police cars and a fire truck
around his helicopter.
He asked a policeman what the trouble was... "I have a permit to land
here".

"That is not the problem. Somebody called and said he saw a burning
helicopter land behind the trees."
