When a file is overwritten it is replaced and is not
recoverable.
If you see the dialog...
Would you like to replace the existing file xxxx.jpg
With this one xxxx.jpg
If you click Yes...your original is gone.
This usually occurs when you have several folders
of pix from your camera that have the same names.
Might be a good idea to change the settings in your
camera so your photo names will be consecutive.
