Photo Printer Recommendation

Hi,

I am looking to buy a photo printer, I prefer HP since I have had good
experience with their products in the past. The biggest issue in addition to
quality is paper weight. This seems not to be quoted in the specs I have
seen and I have had problems with my Deskjet 1220C not feeding heavy photo
paper well.

The 7550 looks good, but again it doesn't look like it will feed a glossy,
heavy, photo paper (44 lbs), or card stock.

Any help much appreciated,
Sid.

Well, a few things to keep in mind.

HP's generally have the highest cost per page due to the expensive
cartridges. Also HP uses a loop-around print path, and that affects the use
of heavy papers.

I know you like HP, but you really should consider a Canon i860 or i960. If
you print a lot of photo's or want to use really heavy paper, they both
excel at that.

Cost per page is also much, much lower and there is NO ink waste due to the
individual ink cartridges.

Not trying to talk you out of HP really, just offering an alternative :)

Thanks for the input. It seemed that all the HPs had the loop around print
path and I couldn't see how they could handle heavy paper. So, I will take a
look at the Canons.

Thanks
Sid.

Here's another vote for Canons. I have an i9100 and love it. Because
it looks like it is replacing the S9000, the S9000s are being sold for
very low prices. You can buy one for as low as $200 and do prints up
to 13x19" and the 6 ink system is fairly economical. The S9000 won't
do borderless 13x19s like the i9100 so you should have in mind some
way to trim your large prints.

The only disadvantage of the Canons that I see is in the printer
drivers. My i9100 has a number of flaws in the driver. One of the
most annoying is a failure to have a setting for 11x14 paper since
Canon doesn't make any 11x14 papers. This is a common size and a
major oversight. You can specify the size as custom but you can't
print a borderless 11x14. Also, a bug in the printer driver will
prevent you from printing a landscape photo on 11x14 paper; you can
work around it by flipping your landscape photo vertically in your
photo software before printing it.

So far, I have not been able to turn off color management in the Canon
driver and print using paper profiles. Epson does a much better job
in this area, so if you get to the point where you're doing
professional work or very serious amateur work and standardization of
colors and workflow is important, one of the higher end Epsons would
be a better bet.

Happy hunting

I bought the HP PSC (Printer/scanner/copier) 2175xi all-in-one at CostCo for
$169.00. I've been very pleased with the photos. I don't know what weight
paper it will handle.
