Photo Gallery does not support captions

J

John

I have a photo gallery I'm trying to edit - and it is
very trying. When I add a picture, no matter what I do,
it will not retain the caption below it. You can put it
in and do an immediate save - it is not there. I tried
building a completely new photo gallery from scratch -
not one of the captions would be retained. I tried
editing Real.htm in the photogallery directory and this
did not work either.
What's really interesting is that this is a new bug -
before the last service pack for Office XP, I did not
have this problem. YES, I have tried recreating the
entire page - it doesn't work. There are no captions in
FrontPage 2002 after you install service pack 2.
Is this a bug, or have I encountered a new feature? The
automatic name misspeller prevention feature, perhaps?
Anyone who has encountered and fixed this, please let me
know how.

Hi John,

Thank you for your post.

Actually, this works on my side (FrontPage 2002 10.4128.4219 SP-2) so I
believe there would be something misconfigured on your photo gallery so you
are unable to save the captions successfully. Let's work on it to find why
this fails to be saved.

1. What's your FrontPage version? Click Help->About and you will find the
exact version.

2. Are you experiencing this issue with an FPSE Web site or a disk based
Web site?

3. Could you package and send a sample to me? You can package the main
photo gallery page and the pictures folder it includes.

4. Please try the following steps to start all over with a new Web and then
check if this works.

a. Create a new folder. C:\FPTest

b. In FrontPage, click "File"->"Open Web" to open this folder. Make sure
to convert this folder to use FPSE.

c. Create a new page in this folder. (Disk-based Web site)

d. Click "Insert"->"Picture"->"New Photo Gallery" to create a new photo
gallery in this page.

e. Check if the captions are saved.

Please check the above information and then provide the results to me for
investigation. If anything is unclear, please let me know. I look forward
to hearing from you.

I have the same version you have; I will send the test
web site you recommend to you separately.

Hi John,

I tried to extract the zip file you sent me to a folder and open the
index.htm in FrontPage for editing. The Photo Gallery works fine on my
side. I can add the captions and those will be kept in the file. I have
sent the edited version to you. Could you please try to open it in
FrontPage directly to see if it works and try to edit it?

By the way, using table is a good approach to implement this. Actually, the
photo gallery feature is using a table as well. I hope to hear from you
soon.

Thanks for your reply. I can open the gallery in my
version of FrontPage; however, none of my edits have any
effect on the text in the captions. I can't add a new
one, change an existing one or delete an existing one.
One other bit of information which might be of
assistance: This was not a problem with the original
installation

Hi,

As I understand, you can view the photo gallery I created successfully but
you cannot edit it just as you cannot create one on your side. Is this
correct?

Since this does not occur with the original installation of FrontPage on
your side, I suspect that there was something conflicting with FrontPage so
this feature is not working properly. I suggest you performing the
following tests to see how this issue happens.

1. Try to boot Windows under Safe Mode and then check if FrontPage works.
This will stop any third-party application or driver from running when you
use FrontPage. You can press F8 when you see the startup menu to boot into
Safe Mode.

2. Try to log in as another user and then check if this user has the same
problem. This will let us know if this issue is related to the specific
user or the related user profile.

If this issue consistently happens on the computer, it is possible that
FrontPage has been corrupted and we may need to completely remove and
reinstall it.

Please try the above steps and then let me know the results. I look forward
to hearing from you.
