I just recently bought a new computer. It runs off WinXP. I went to purchase
a game online yesterday, and it wouldn't work. Their support staff informed
me today that I have an anonymous IP address due to a proxy. I was taken back
a bit, as I didn't know I even had a proxy set up on the computer. In order
to purchase the game I have to disable the proxy, but I have no clue how to
do that without even knowing where the proxy is. Can anyone help me?

Some ISP's utilise a proxy server for segments of users to reduce their
traffic and (sometimes) speed up browsing. You might want to check
with your ISP to see if this is the case.

It certainly true that ISPs use Proxy Servers. Something they do is cache
frequently accessed popular web pages and so can deliver a boost to browser
performance-particularly with dial-up. If your problem is with the ISP fine,
but check that your browser hasn't been set to read through a proxy server
itself. In IE go to Tools-Internet Options-Click on connections and in the
box press the Lan Settings button. Now make sure the use Proxy Server
checkbox is left unchecked. Hope it helps
