Phantom email

I am running a dual boot WIN XP Pro SP-2 system with XP Pro in both
partitions. My POP3 email client is Outlook 2003, also installed in both
partitions. Both instances of Outlook use the same PST file. Both copies of
Outlook show no unread eamil messages. The problem is that on the Windows
welcome screen of Partition 2 there is a message just below my user name
that states that there is one unread email. This does not happen when
booting into the other partition even though there is only one PST (Outlook
98 compatable) file that both instances of Outlook use. How can this be and
what can I do about it?
