Phantom email messages

I am running Office System 2003 SP1 with Windows XP SP2
This has been perplexing to me because every time I Send/Receive outlook
indicates that it is sending messages that I have not created. The numbers of
messages vary. Nothing is in my sent items box except the messages that I
have created. Nothing is in the Outbox when Outlook indicates that as many as
14 messages are being sent THAT I DID NOT CREATE. All valid messages are
being received by my recipients. I have no idea where these phantom messages
are being sent. Could I be a victim of spoofing? I use Norton Systemworks
Pro 2005 to scan outgoing and incoming email. Norton does not indicate that
it is scanning email for these phantom messages. What is going on? Any ideas?
Thanks

Possible read receipts. See if
