Phantom email alert on desktop

When i start Windows XP i have the alert " 1 unread email " next to my user account icon..ok..so i have checked everywhere and there is no unread mail at all..My questions are... Have i missed something ? or is this alert just not cleared from my desktop after a genuine email..? If so..how do i clear it..?Thanks..Gerry.

You can download TweakUI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.
