It's a system folder and can't be deleted. It stores you programs that you
access all the time so that they launch faster. This folder can be manually
cleaned out if you like, but it will rebuild your most used apps as you use
them over the next few days, which could slow it down a bit until the folder
gets re-populated.
Not quite. It stores a *record* for each program (if you check you will
find the files are quite small). These tell the system what files get
accessed, in what order, when the program loads. It means that then
when you load it, the system can arrange to get 8all* the files into RAM
as quickly as possible, without waiting to be asked - thus usually
speeding things up. The information also gets used as data for a
regular mini-defrag optimisation of file placements to speed things even
more, overall.
