If I am using Excel 2007 in both native and compatibility mode do I still
need both the Personal.xlsm and Personal.xls files...? All my macros are
duplicted across them

I use xl2003 on my "real" pc. And xl2007 on a virtual pc. I use the same
personal.xla on both--not personal.xlam.

But I haven't done anything to take advantage of the ribbon. My toolbars and
menubars appear under the Addins group in xl2007.

I like to add this to Dave's reply

It is possible to add RibbonX to the personal file in 2007 but
if a workbook is hidden in 2007 it will not show you the menu changes in the ribbon.

The only way is to use a Add-in then in 2007
For the OP: I have a few examples on my site

I use one Personal like Dave because the QAT is adequate for getting to my
macros. But just to comment on one thing you said, it's the workbooks that
are in compatibility vs non-compatibility mode not Excel.
