personal web server?

I'd like to find a way to quickly and easily transfer files with
friends. I've used ICQ in years past but have no idea what's available
today. Is there personal web server software to quickly and easily allow
file transfers with friends? If so could you please tell me what
software is available and your comments on it?

- Your pick of messenger applications (MSN, YAHOO, ICQ, etc..)...
- Email (your own, GMAIL, etc...)...
- Many 'free' services that allow you to upload files for others to
download...
- Many FTP applications that allow you to install/run your own FTP server...
- Many web servers (installable on your OS)...
- Many web hosting services you could pay for and place files up on your own
personal page with your own domain name there - on their servers...
