Personal Folders Backup (Add In)

Recently installed Office 2003 to a new Vista Premium computer. Was able to
restore my original .pst file from old computer and everything so far works
fine. Also installed the Personal Folders Backup tool from Microsoft that I
have been using for my backup.

When I execute the backup I no longer see the progress dialog box, however,
the backup.outlook.pst is created with the proper size and date. Is anyone
else seeing this behavior? Although the file seems to be creating OK I'd feel
more comfortable seeing the progress box I'm used to.

Thanks,

There is nothing special to that. That dialog is initiated by Windows and
not by Outlook and should be displayed. Maybe your file is copied fast
enough that you don't see the dialog or could the dialog be hiding behind a
window?

I realize that, I'm just used to seeing it. I usually execute the backup
after closing Outlook from the desktop - no other windows to hide behind. You
may have something with it being too fast, however, in general this machine
is not much faster than the old one.

I did forget to mention I almost immediately receive a windows "ding" sound
and then no other indication it's completed. Maybe it's a "Vista" thing. :(

Thanks for helping...

How big is the file?
I see the dialog when using the tool, but then again; I have 2 files
accounting for almost 2GB ;-)
After the copy is complete, I get the "ding" sound as well.

Roady - One file and it's relatively small at about 92,000 KB. On XP it took
about 7 seconds to complete with similar hardware.

If the hard disk happens to be a SATA disk and especially when you copy from
one hard disk to another, copying a file of that size will go pretty much
unnoticed.

A 100MB file copies in less than 2 seconds here and that was on the same
disk (which is already quite full and also used by the OS). If the file has
just been in use, it copies even faster (a second or less) and I don't get
the dialog either.

Well, this is a sata drive, file has always just been used, and disk is not
full. So, I think your assumption is correct in that it happens to fast for
the box to show.

Thanks for taking the time to help with this and we'll call it resolved!

On a related subject, I am running XP with two users and, therefore, two
desktops. I have installed the Microsoft Office Personal Folders backup tool
but it only works on one of the desktops, i.e. the "backup" option does not
appear when I click on "File". I also notice that the tool only appears on
one of the desktops when viewed via "Add Remove Programs". Is there a way to
fix this? Thanks.
