Whenever I am online Norton Internet Security
persistently gives the following warning:

! Low risk

"A remote system is attempting to access Microsoft
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services on your commputer"

Does anyone know what this means and why my computer is
trying to access Microsoft ?

That is not what the message means. It means that an outside party is
trying to access your computer. Preventing that access is a major
reason why you have a firewall. Most firewalls have a place where you
can say "never allow this connection and remember my answer". I'm sure
that NIS has a Help File and/or Tutorial. Use that to help you set
preferences for the program, including warnings and alerts.

The generic host process contains many other processes.
One of these is the w32tm service (time service)
Its default setting for updating the clock is to connect to the time server
at time.windows.com.
So it may be that or one of a few other processes. It is fully documented so
none really knows.

Disregard my other post, I misread your post.
Thought it was the other way round, gen host trying to contact MS, not
remote system trying to contact your machine
