perpetual restart after windows update install

Hi
I get a perpetual restart after a windows update install (which always fails
incidentally). I cannot prevent the continious restarts, It won't start in
safe mode or any other mode. It just displays the message "configuring
windows updates" just before the identity log in screen but it never reached
log in just restarts again. This cycle continues over and over even if I pull
the plug and restart. Eventually (hours later) windows figured out that it
wasn't starting correctly and offed me a system restore option which I
naturally took. All this happened after I tried the windows fix for failed
windows updates with error code 80070003. I have stopped the window update
service to prevent any future occurance until this is resolved.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Do you know which update was casuing the issue? You can decline that
particular update.

SP1 should be out early in the new year and I'd think that would probably
get around this issue. I've been running RC1 on my laptop for about a week
now and it seems stable.

Hi thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately I now have more than 20 recommended updates to install and
don't know which or how many cause this problem. I'm reluctant to try and
install again without a definate fix as it put me into the restart cycle
again for hours. I'm sorry but I don't know what RC1 is.

RC1 is Release Candidate 1 for Vista Service Pack 1. When a product is near
ready for release they sometimes put out a release candidate, they did this
with Vista itself 12 months ago.

Hi, Thanks for the reply.
I don't know what a Release Candiate is, or if knowing this puts me any
closer to a fix for my problem. Regards
Gary
