I'm on 3 machines of WinXP, and 1 machine on Win98 (which doesn't appear to
have a problem), I would like to know if
there are basic settings, within each machine, so that I never get any
errors whilst navigating different folders. There need be no hidden files,
or nothing that is privi to other machines. Where shall I go to make sure
all machines have access to all machine, as I am experiencing problems now,
when I try to access "Documents and Settings" on one machine, but not on
another, and I can access "Program Files" one way, but it won't let me
access it from another machine. I don't having Simple File sharing on, I'm
on WinXP Pro
all 4 machines are mine, I would like access to everyfile on every machine,
from any machine.

Regards.
Paul.

On every XP Pro machine create user accounts which match any user names and
passwords used to log onto any of the other machines. Make these accounts
members of the administrators group on each XP machine. Unless you change
permissions to restrict network access, all such users should be able to
access all shared folders and drives on all machines.

I don't quiet understand what you mean there, because on my laptop and my
main pc, there is a user called the same on both with both having the same
password, and yet, I can't get access to simple things like "Program Files".

Make sure the user is a member of the administrators group on both machines.
If you still cannot access Program Files, check both Share and NTFS
permissions. Also, check Local Security Policy - User Rights Assignment -
Access this computer over the network. Can you access Progam Files on the
remote machine if you do \\remotemachinename\C$ ?

The username on the laptop is a member of the Admin group, but I don't know
how to add my user from my main machine to the list, on the laptop I
initially (after the install) setup the username with my firstname and
surname, but on my main pc the username is just my firstname. You say if I
can't still access Program Files, check the both, where? on the laptop as in
Right clicking it? Local Security is set for everyone to access over
network. I tried to access the program files, by putting
\\mylaptopnetworkname\C$, and I got a login prompt, but no matter what
username I entered, it wouldn't let me access the C Drive.

I'm really scratching my head here... :( but thanks for your assistance on
this matter.

Paul,

Besides disabling SFS, did you check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves". If you have it set as "Guest only",
you'll not be able to access "Documents and Settings" or "Program Files".

Paul,

Lack of access to "Documents and Settings" or "Program Files", but access to
other folders, is symptomatic of Guest access being used. This could happen
from any of several conditions on either the client or the server:
1) Non-Guest account non-existent, or non-matching password.
2) Non-Guest account not used, as in "Guest only" LSP.
3) Non-Guest account not used, as in Simple File Sharing.

Are we overlooking anything?

In all this confusing of mine, I have seriously buggered things up now, I
can't access Windows Update, and reading into it would appear because of
priveleges being wrong, it can be stopped, I think I'm going to do a
re-install on all 3 machines, and set them all up exactly at the same time,
letter for letter..
