Hi,

I lost

X:\windows\system32\config\system

a couple of days ago; and had
to re-install WinXP, yet again.

It's bad E'-god-damned-nough;
that MS makes an operating system
that internet vandals destroy every
week, or month(SP2) - but they make
me go to the telephone (I HATE
telephones!), to beg for their
permission to use what I bought!

I'm going to start looking for
programs, that don't require
passwords, keys, or other pest-ware.

This is just getting to be
rolling that famous rock, up that
damned hill, every week!

I'll keep using it on the couple thousand I manage.. Along with OS X and
various flavors of *nix.
Trouble does happen - but in a properly managed environment - the impact of
said trouble can be lessened along with the recovery time.
Doesn't matter what OS you use - being prepared goes a long way.

As for freeware - *nix has various flavors:

Download/burn/try some out..

OpenOffice is a decent alternative to Microsoft Office.

Web Browsers/FTP clients/email clients/multimedia editing tools/remote
control/firewall/instant messaging.etc - the list is enormous. Freeware is
everywhere. You can have a system where only the hardware and the media you
burn your applications to for safety and easy install is your only cost
(excluding whatever internet service provider you choose.)

Ken;
If "internet vandals destroy every week, or month", it is time to start
looking at how you maintain and use your computer.
Exactly what is happening?
What are you doing that encourages these problems?
What are you not doing that encourages these problems?

You are in a very small minority if your windows is destroyed about every
month.
