Does anybody know of a progamme which safely permantly erases/shreds large
files i.e movies/photo's from my hard drive and is supported by Vista 64 bit.
Doesn't matter about it being free or paid for?

If you are fine with command-line interface, there's a couple of options I
can recommend:

- Built-in CIPHER utility has /W switch that performs DoD-compliant (read
safe) multi-pass wipe of free space on any disk you point it to. For more
info refer to "CIPHER /?" help. Cons: it doesn't work with files, only with
free space so you need to Shift-delete file in question first. Also, wiping
the whole free space can take considerably more time than a single file.

- Sdelete.exe utility from Mark Russinovich is available as free download
from Microsoft web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Security/SDelete.mspx
Cons: it doesn't have GUI :)

If you need a GUI application, I'm sure you can find plenty of them by using
keywords like "safe delete" or "wipe" in your favorite search engine.

Thanks for that Alexander, I will look into that and also do a search for it,
I used to have a couple of programmes, one woul shredd it or I could use an
incinerator, but sadly not viable with Vista 64 bit.

How about the shredder in Defender.

You already have it, and it works ok for me.
