periods in attachment's filename

a user receives Word documents as an attachment in outlook 2003. the
filename of the attachment contains multiple periods; for example, the name
of the file is 1.2.3.doc. when the user clicks on the attachment from the
outlook message, the user selects to open the document. when the document
gets opened in Word, the name of the document is changed to 1 2 3.doc. the
first two periods in the filename of the attachment have been replaced by
spaces when Word opens it. why is this happening and how to fix?

TIA,

You shouldn't use double extensions (which is basically what you are doing).
Directly opening mails from Outlook will store them in a temp folder.
Security features will remove any double extensions by replacing the dots by
spaces. You cannot change this; just don't use double extensions or save the
message first.

Don't have an answer, but a suggestion. Get the user out of the habit of
opening directly from an email. Save to a hard drive and open from that
spot. Docs opened from email are temporary documents (even when saved) and
are regularly lost when the temp files are cleaned out.
