performance problem

There is a serious performance problem with my PC. (Sony
Vaio, running at 2.1 ghz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP).
The "cisvc.exe" process uses about 50% of the CPU
resources for 30 minutes at a time and then goes dormant
for 2 to 3 hours, then starts up again. During this 30
minute period the computer is not usable. What can be
done to remedy this issue?

Thanks,
Greg

Cisvc.exe is the file indexing service that comes with Windows XP. (You can
read about indexing in Help and Support.) It's a useful thing, if you need
to search for documents on the basis of the text inside - like the index of
a book. Problem is, the indexing service sucks up a lot of CPU. Since many
users don't find indexing to be that useful, Microsoft made it easy to
uninstall. Just go to Add or Remove Programs - the Indexing Service is a
Windows component.
