Serious performance issues after latest update

after installing IE7 and latest update my laptop began having serious
performance issues. It even lags during text entry in word.
Cpu seems to be busy most of the time even when none of the apps are
running. The memory usage is 3 times more(350-390Mb), then on my desktop or
before the updates.
Task Manager:
Svchost - 44-49Mb (for one of the instances)
Iexplore - 44-49Mb
Explorer - 38-44Mb
3-9mb for the rest of native windows proccesses.

Could you please advise on the solution to the problem or at least point in
some direction.

I'm using Windows XP Pro Sp2 on 1.5 Celeron with 1.24Gb of ram

Hi mate as a rule i steer well clear of IE 7 and any of the latest patches
and beta's. I would seriously advise going back to before the issue started.
A system restore should put you back. IE7 should do a restore automaticaly
when updating core components. Try rolling your system back as the first
call. Or ditch it and go with Mozilla Firefox :).
I dont know the ins and outs of IE7 but it is almost certainly more resource
hungry. The task manager info you put on here had IE running. Does your
computer only slow down when it is open?

no, the computer is slow all the time. Though running IE7 doesn't seem to
slow it more. The major problem appears when i run any of the office apps.
Word for example, right from the start, without any doc loaded uses 70+Mb of
memory.

Checked for any malware, viruses and other junk. None detected.

I have a piece of dung HP computer and it has never been able to restore to a
previous point. I also have IE 7 and would like to ditch it. Any suggestions?
Would add/remove IE and then use Mozzilla to download IE 6 work?

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Windows Task Manager.
Go to the Processes tab and click twice on the CPU column header.
That will sort the list into descending order based on CPU usage. Post
the names of the 4 or 5 top items back here - ignore the entry for
"System Idle Process" as that is just a placeholder to account for the
time that the CPU is doing nothing.

Good luck
