Performance Monitor "msc" File FUBARed?

All,

I've assembled a new PC with XP Pro as the OS. I'm a newbie to XP, but was
fairly conversant with WINNT on my old machine. I used the System Monitor
function in NT, but the MMC version (Performance Monitor) in XP is kicking
my butt. What I'm trying to see is simply the rate at which data is
entering and leaving my system via my dial-up connection. While D/Ling new
drivers, I noted that the data "IN" rate seemed very low. It took me awhile
to find my old installation copy of PC Magazine's NetPerSec so I was using
Performance Monitor in its stead to see what the hell was going on. What I
saw was amazing. The download rate was very low and data was often seen
leaving the machine at more than twice the rate it was entering, for
extended periods. I couldn't believe it, so I started to tinker and in the
process screwed up Performance Monitor or, more likely, I'm missing
something. What I eventually found after I installed my virus software on
the new PC was the "W32.Welchia.Worm". Where the worm came from is another
story. Well, after removing the "worm" and installing NetPerSec I don't see
the unusual data flow, but I'm left with a Performance Monitor that never
shows any data going in or out. NetPerSec is working just find (it's what I
was used to seeing on my old machine.)

I'm looking for advice on how to restore the XP perfmon.msc file to the
default condition. I erased the original and rebuilt the one I have now.
The new shows processor performance (% Processor Time at least) just fine,
but the "rate related" Network Interface objects all seem dead. I've
installed the "Performance Log and Alerts" and the "System Monitor Control"
plugins in their default conditions. Here's what I'm looking at with the
perfmon.msc control file;
- Bytes Sent/sec WAN [PPP_SLIP] Interface
- Bytes Received/sec WAN [PPP_SLIP] Interface
- Bytes Sent/sec MS TCP Loopback interface
- Bytes Received/sec MS TCP Loopback interface
- Current Bandwidth WAN [PPP_SLIP] Interface
- % Processor Time
Except for the "% Processor Time", all I get are 'flat-lines" (using default
and any other scaling).

Additional diagnostic info:
- NetPerSec (Which measures TCP related data) works fine.
- The Network related measurements in Task Manager appear to work well.

Looking for suggestions to fix what I have OR to recover the default
(out-of-the-box) C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfmon.msc file.

Looking for help. Thanks -pgm

All,

An update to my last::-

I recovered the compressed perfmon.ms_ file from my XP Pro installation CD,
expanded it an copied to the system32 directory. I then started a download,
changed the "plug-ins" I was viewing to include anything in the Networks
Interface "object" having to do with data xfer rates and STILL get nothing
but flat-lines. OK, confirmed! It me that the problem.

So, the question is now, What do I look at in Performance Monitor to see the
kbits/sec (or KB/sec) coming into my system?
