percentage symbol

when I enter a number into a cell, the number appears
along with the % symbol, how do I elimenate this from
happening all the time.would appreciate any help

using excel 2000

check the format of this cell (Format - Cells) and change it for
example to 'General'
 
Check format / style / and modify number to general
