Greater Than Symbols and calculations

Hello,

I am using the less than symbols within my excel sheet, however when I do the SUM(A1:A3) formula, (A1:A3) are examples, the formula treats the number with the less than symbol as a zero.

Any way to make it add up the 3 numbers including the number next to the symbol?
