Peer2Peer Share Permissions?

H

Hadi

Hi sorry this is beginner question: We connected two Win2k Prof as P2P and
would like to share a folder. Why do we always have to provide a UserName &
PW? We don't want to have any kind of security like that.
Everyone is LocAdmin and Everyone has permissions on the share as well on
the file system. What did we forget?
Greetings.

Hadi, if UserA is logged into MachineA with PassWordA, to access a share
on MachineB, several things must be true:

1) There must also be a local UserA defined on MachineB that has the
exact same PassWordA, including case.
2) The Share permissions and NTFS permissions for the shared folder must
include UserA. Note that the Everyone and Authenticated Users group
will include any user that has an account and password on MachineB.

There is a way to get around these requirements by enabling the local
Guest account on MachineB and granting Everyone access to the share, but
that is a significant security exposure (you'll notice that it is
disabled by default), especially if you are connected to the Internet.
The local Guest account is enabled by default on XP Home (not
Professional!), but many of us shudder at the thought!
