We are using a PC with WinXP pro as a peer-to-peer file server. We set it up with "simple" file sharing. We run AutoCAD which accesses drawings on the file server. We are getting up to 30 wait times to open a drawing, do operations which require temporary files to be placed in the working folder (on the file server). With this new setup, we now need a way to speed up the time it takes to open drawings and copy to clipboard and write to the shared folder. It just works slow. What can we do to speed things up? Is "simple" file sharing the wrong way? If so, how do I change this? I have administrator privileges.

And how many users have you got accessing this "server" at any one time?

One person told me to use these commands from the command prompt to convert file system to NTFS on two drives.
Convert c: /fs:NTFS

Convert e: /fs:NTFS

Do you agree with this as a solution?

Not quite. To convert to NTFS, yes you use the CONVERT command. But first
read http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm because there's an issue regarding
cluster size that isn't obvious.

Also note that conversion is a big step, affecting everything on your drive.
When you take such a big step, no matter how unlikely, it is always possible
that something could go wrong and cause the loss of everything on your
drive. For that reason, it's prudent to make sure you have a backup of
anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

NTFS file conversion may not be so simple. Please read:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm

I only did our backup drive as everything else I attempted was already NTFS.

After reading the website noted above, what do you think? The cluster size
can still be pretty big. The process is a little more complicated following
these instructions. Since Alex Nichol isn't supporting my computer, I
haven't downloaded BootIT NG or installed anything. I would prefer you to
review this information and have you do this or similar procedure at your
discretion so that problems requiring support will be on ECWEST, and not
some mysterious webmaster. Tell me how you think you should proceed.

I'm not sure I'm correctly understanding you here, but are you asking *me*
to do this for you?

Sorry, I provide only advice. You'll have to do this yourself, if you want
to.

Or did you mean to send this to somebody else, and not to the newsgroup?
