Peer to Peer Networking

Does peer to peer networking work best when both operating systems are
the same? (i.e. both Win 98 or both Win 2000)

I'm following the directions on
<http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/peer.htm> using Win 98 & Win
2000 with a store bought crossover cable and it won't work. I'm not
using a hub and there are only two computers involved. The NIC cards
are both Linksys; however, one's brand new and the other is about 4 or
5 yrs old. The Win 98 machine is also connected to the web via cable
so I do have a RealTek card in the machine with it's protocols as
well.

Any ideas what is wrong?

Make sure The network ID is the same in the IP, but make sure the Host ID is
different......
Eg: Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Ip address 1: 192.168.101.1
Ip address 2: 192.168.101.2

Each machine needs its own IP address. Also make sure they are on the same
workgroup.

Try the above things, if no luck let me know, via the group!

It isn't that UNIX isn't a user-freindly operating system, it's
just very choosy about who its friends are, and even best friends
fight sometimes. (remove "NOSPAM" from email to reply)

I've had linux, Win 3.11, Win 95, and Win 98 all talking to each other on my network.
Computers range from 386 to Pentium.
