Peer-to-Peer Network Problems

Hi All,

This problem has me completely stumped. I am not a networking expert
but I have put together several peer-to-peer networks with no
problems. I will try to give as much information as I can without
making this post several pages long.

7 computer network, 2 of these run Win2000 Pro (SP4), 2 run WinXP Home
and 3 run WinXP Pro (2 with SP2).
1 WinXP Home acts as the file server, it contains the data for my
point of sale software.
All computers can see each other, access the data on the server and
use any printers that are shared on any computer on the network.

Problem: None of the WinXP Pro computers can access each other. The
WinXP Pro computers can access the file server and any printers on the
network (except printer connected to the other WinXP Pro computer).
The WinXP Pro computers can access the Win2000 Pro and WinXP Home
computers. But, the WinXP Pro computers can not access any other
WinXP Pro computer. I get a permission denied or a server not found
error.

Does any one have any idea where I should start looking? I have
checked everything I can think of and I still can not get the WinXP
Pro computers to access each others shares.

Thanks for any and all help,

Charles

Is 'file and print sharing' enabled in network properties? Is the network
admin user listed in the admin group on the XP Pro boxes? We had a similar
problem with Pro and Win2k3 Server and that was what fixed it.

Hi,

Yes, 'file and print sharing' is turned off on all 3 WinXP Pro
computers. I will have to check on the admin user, I will post back
later.

Thanks for your input,

File and print sharing needs to turned on, not off. You are behind a
firewall for protection from the outside world, right?

Hi,

Ok, I will turn them back on when I get to the office tomorrow (they
were on when I had all the trouble, I turned them off to see if it
helped and left them that way. The WinXP Pro computers do not have
access to the internet, so no firewall or virus software installed
(used for point of sale use only). The WinXP Home computer that is
connected to the internet (and acts as the file server) by cable modem
has Norton Firewall. The network is connected by hub not a router, so
any computer that has internet access goes through the file server.

If you need any more information feel free to ask.

Thanks for your help,

Charles
