i want to connect to computers together to share files one is a laptop and he
other is a desktop. can anyone guide me the right way?? what software to use
and how i'm gonna be able to do this. both cpu's have NIC cards but i'm not
quite sure where to go from there.help

The software you need comes with Windows. The best plan is to use a router
and set both computers to be on the same workgroup; the absolute minimum is
to use a network cable wired as crossover, then set both NICs to have IP
addresses in the same range (say, 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, both with
subnet masks of 255.255.255.0), and share the folders you want to share.

In XP, go to Start, Help and Support, and search for "share files and
folders".

Googling those words will lead you to large amounts of information on the
topic.

The problem with this method (using the crossover cable and fixed addresses)
is that if you need to connect to other networks - like a high-speed
internet connection, or taking the latpop elsewhere - you'll have to change
all the settings. So the most versatile method is to use a router. This
has the very valuable bonus of letting you share high-speed internet
connections, if you have access to that.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
