Peculiar Behaviors: Fast-keys won't work, Focussed window not on top

S

Sam Low

I am facing two I think not related peculiar problems:

1. Sometimes, after using IE for a while, the fast-keys (eg, Alt-F for
File) won't work anymore. Even if I click open a menu item with the mouse,
the keys to select an item also doesn't work. Basically the keyboard is
dead except for backspace and alt-arrow keys.

2. If I make IE to go offline (File, Work Offline), and I switch focus to
another window, the newly focussed window won't come to the top. To
overcome this, I have to click the instance of IE where I click File Work
Offline on the title bar. Only then can I raise another window to the top.

To describe my environment a little, I do not maximize my application
windows. I usually have lots of overlapped windows. I usually have more
than one instance of IE running. And I have my notebook PC running for days
if not weeks without rebooting, and sometimes the IE can be opened for days.

Thanks

Sam

Could be a sign of malware. Test by *unchecking*
Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)
(Options, Advanced tab)

Also make sure that there are no residual effects such as
a User style sheet override in Accessibility settings.

Note that both changes could be made with the Control Panel's
Internet Options applet while IE is shutdown (e.g. while iexplore.exe
is not an active process in Task Manager's Processes tab)

Note also that if either change helps you have more work to do,
indentifying and eliminating the cause of the interference.

Good luck
