pdf links freezing my ie6

A week or two ago my IE6 browser (in Win XP)
started freezing if I clicked any links to pdf docs.

It begins to open the pdf doc, then nothing ...

I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat version 6, and
and installed Adobe Acrobat version 7.
- No joy.

Tried downloading and installing SP2
- no joy.

It's a work PC so it's got a virus checker and
I'm pretty sure I haven't even been near any
sites remotely likely to be sus nor had any
strange email attachments and the security
level is always at least medium - I don't think
it's had a chance to get any malware.

Can't seem to find other posts or MSKB articles
about this.

Any suggestions?

Could be very large PDFs - occassionally my IE appears to stop responding,
then some time later will spring to life. I think it depends on if the
server you're downloading the PDF from supports byte serving or not - if
not, then nothing will appear until the entire PDF is downloaded.

Thanx for the reply Dan, but it's happening with
*every* pdf doc I try to open through a browser link.
(Opening pdf files directly from my hard disk works).

I've tried the HTML version sometimes offered in a
list (such as a Google search) and some of those
(in HTML) seem to be fairly small docs.

Since I can read pdf docs from my hard drive but not
through the browser,
I've also tried to right-mouse-click the link and choose:
"Save target as..." to save PDF docs to my hard drive and
then read them.

But now I get the File Download error message:
||: Internet Explorer cannot download
||: sa05Q1Results.pdf') from exitDisclaimer('http.
||:
||: No such interface supported

[ Where sa05Q1Results.pdf was the filename ].

I would suggest going back to Acrobat 6, v7 is supposedly a little flaky.
However, it also might be worth running a Repair on Internet Explorer,
possibly a SFC /SCANNOW to check the system files on your PC. Have you tried
disabling the virus scanner temporarily while trying to open/download a PDF,
in case it's the virus scanner performing a scan of the incoming data that
is the cause of the problem?

I have also had an issue in the past with Acrobat 5 always warning me about
PDFs possibly not working due to being created in v6, and no matter how many
times I ticked the box to ignore it kept coming back - this had the side
effect of making the browser appear to have locked up because Acrobat was
waiting for me to click OK or Cancel on the dialog, and it wasn't visible.
