Is there a way within a PowerPoint presentation to direct a hyperlinked

On someone else's system, probably not other than by writing some fairly
complex VBA code, and then there'd be no certainty that their security settings
would allow it to run. So the general, safe answer is no, I'm afraid.

On your own PC you could specify a run program action and set the program to
the full path to Reader followed by the full path to the PDF you want to open.

Or if it's practical, just start Reader first. Links to PDFs should then use
it rather than Acrobat itself.
