pdf and bots

If I put some files in a folder that are in pdf format and link to them from
my pages can spiders read them?

I heard the other day that Google can index flash now - those fancy flash
guys are going to have a field day

I wonder how content in a plain old html file would be ranked against any
sort of binary file. If content needed to be indexed I'd still put it in an
HTML file - I can't see binary content ranking as well.
