We have a 2000 Std edition server with two NIC's. One is
used for the public internet access and the other for the
internal network.

The internal network interface card is failing and needs
to be replaced. Is there any easy way of reconfiguring
the server to use a new network card?

I know Microsoft has addressed the issue and fixed the
problem??? in windows 2003 server.

When activate the new NIC, change the IP on the old and
setup the new NIC with the settings of the old, none of
the clients can access the network or internet.

Thanks for your help.

Your network consists of many PCs and other devices,
not just the server. You write that none of the clients can
access the network - did you do any of the following:

- Ping any of the other PCs?
- What message do you get when you ping the server by name?
- What message do you get when you ping the server by address?
- Did you turn off your firewall during testing?
- Did you check the speed settings of the various network adapters?

It is clearly a network card failure. I have ran across a
couple of these problems when dealing with PC Servers.
The problem has to do with replacing the internal NIC
associated with the PDC. On this particular server, once
the NIC is replaced all modes of checking for connectivity
fail or are unresponsive. When the original card is in
the server and acting up, rebooting the server will fix
the error for sometimes an hour and other times for
several days. It is a very intermittent connectivity
problem. The server has been up and running for about a
year with no problems and 1 month with no problems since
all of the last Microsoft updates where applied.

A: Yes, we tried pinging other PCs with both the old card
and the new. When pinging PCs from the Server and the
Server from PCs you get a request timed out. Lowering the
speed on the old card when it is acting up will sometimes
fix the problem for a short period of time. (i.e. auto to
10bt) The firewall is not a factor since it is a hardware
firewall connected to the public card only. When the
connectivity for everyone else is lost the server is still
functional on the web side of the house. IE will surf the
web on the server.
