PCMCIA slot in laptop has no power

I've done some looking around the web, and nothing is showing up... except for:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822242

There isn't a 'fix', just MS saying to contact support? How enigmatic...

Anyway, I'm using a netgear wg511 for my wireless adapater on a Dell D600...
worked great for about a year until today... Tried uninstalling the ports..
reinstalling... the cards work fine on other units... Windows recognizes the
ports, but there's no activity or lights on card...

Windows XP Pro SP2

Hi,

You didn't fully read the article. There is a fix for the problem described,
but you need to call support for the free fix. This is normal for hotfixes
that have not been fully tested. It is done this way to ensure that the fix,
which might break something else, is appropriate for your problem.

One other thought, have you checked the system BIOS to ensure the slot is
enabled? Also, many laptops have a switch to enable/disable wireless access,
though most of these are for onboard adapters.

Have you tried Function and F2?

Thanks for the feedback Rick. Yes... I see where I'm suposed to contact
support for the issue. I'd rather try it on my own; which is why I'm
posting. There has to be someone other than someone at MS who can give me
the same steps.

Then apply the service pack to update the file.

Hi Shane,

The fix in the article requires a file update - this is not something you
can do "on your own" unless you have significant experience writing system
files that are specific to the networking aspects of an XP installation.
