pci network cards?

We have three pcs all running XP PRO SP2, we have just added a new Maxdata pc
which has a PCI network card. We have set up the pc with the workgroup name
MSHOME. If we click my network places it can see the shares from the other
machines, but if we click view workgroup computers, after a few minutes it
reports the error "MSHOME is not accessible" Also the other machines can see
the icon for the maxdata, but if you click it the same error message pops up.

The same procedure was carried out on all 3 machines. 1 & 2 can see and
share without a problem, but not access maxdata & maxdata can see 1 & 2 and
use their files.

All three machines have TCP/IP, QOS and file & print sharing and client set
up with obtain IP address automatically set up, one last point they are all
connected to a BT ADSL broadband router and can all access the internet.

I thought XP made networking easier?

Stephen,

XP does make networking easier. But it's still possible to screw it up, and
considering how many different software products you can install, it's
surprising that it works at all sometimes.

One of the most common causes of your problem, which is not infrequently
reported here, would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or
other security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any
might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

We can probably help if you wish to provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig
/all" from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.
