well i have an msi k9n6gm motherboard with a 16x pci express slot. i put the
card in just like any other pci card pushing both ends in firmly. now i was
wondering do i pull it out like a normal pci card? or is it like agp (left to
right motion whilst pulling out) this is my motherboard

in case anyone needs a look there's the link to a pic for my motherboard. i
believe there is no lock on the pci express slot. but any help with this is
greatly appreciated since i am new to pci express and my gpu fan is dying for
some reason so i gotta send it back in. thanks alot for your time with this
matter.

It doesn't look like there is a lock. I see four sections in the connector.
On either end is an opening for a mechanical section. The electrical section
consists of a short section at the front (power), and a longer section at
the back (data). mechanical - power - data - mechanical ("heel")

If we look at a picture of a PCI Express x16 video card for a moment,
there are four sections on this. The heel on the right hand side, is
shaped so that *if* the slot had a card lock, the card could be secured
in place. As it is, it looks like this card would just slide into place.

It could be, that the two plastic "prongs" near the heel end of the connector,
would close over top of the heel. So you may need to open the "prongs" a bit,
as you try to ease the card out of place. It is usually pretty hard
to get your fingers near features like that. Some other slots have an
actual lock with a handle on it, and that one is a bit more obvious (moves
side to side).

but if those prongs are plastic, what would be the safest/best way to open
them without risking any harm?

Well, if you use a tool, it could slip and scrape a component right off
the motherboard. And surface mount components can be hard to find once
removed. (I know, because I've been on the lab floor on my hands and
knees looking for them :) )

I would try a finger first, as you're less likely to damage something
in the process. Take your time...

What does this have to with the OS? NOTHING. It is a pure hardware
question with no relation to the OS.

Ask elsewhere
