for some reason i cant hear my cd's or radio stations through my new sound
card today. i could in the past but it just aint happenin now and i cant
understand why.

Are you getting any system sounds when you boot your PC?. Try a
System Restore of your PC which may reinstall the soundcard drivers.
Pick a date prior to when your systems sounds stopped working.
Start>All Programs>Accesssories>System Tools>System Restore.
