PCI card install problem

I'm having problems installing PCI cards (modem & USB2),
in that XP recognises new hardware but the subsequent
software driver install fails;

"Cannot install this hardware"
"There was a problem installing this hardware"
"An error occurrred during the installation of the device"
"The data is invalid"

I first encountered this about 6 months ago while trying
to install the USB2 card, but assummed it might have been
a motherboard compatibility problem and gave up. Now I'm
trying to install a modem with the same problem.

Both the cards came with non-Windows Logo software and I'm
wondering if that is the problem. There is a high end
sound card in the system that is also PCI working fine.

The system is a 1.8GHz P4 Titan series M/B model GA-81RX

Tearing what's left of my hair out on this one!!!!

Have you gone to the Manufacturers website ( of the PCI Cards ) and look for
WinXP Drivers? If the cards came with software that was designed for Mac or
Linux then sure you would have trouble installing the cards.

Try this::

Change entries that have 'read only' for USB to 'full permissions'
and reboot.
Be careful while editing the registry.

That was it - good call.

The PCI modem card itself was "read only" and when I
changed it to "full access" and did a 'find new hardware'
everything installed OK. Now to try the USB 2 card. Both
the current M/B USB entries and their hubs are read only,
so I may have to change them as well if just doing the
card doesn't work.

Thanks for the assistance - outstanding.
