pc will only boot if i have have a 2nd h/drive connected

i have recently formatted my h/drive and replaced the mobo. now it wil
only boot if i attatch a 2nd h/drive as a slave to the primary master
if i try to boot from just my main h/drive, the bios wont detect th
drive and i have to go through the auto detect everytime, whereas wit
the 2nd drive attatched, it boots like a dream. am i missing th
obvious here!
 
Certain HD's have a special jumper positions for both Master (single) and
Master (slave attached)
 
Has this been resolved by correctly setting the jumper on the back of the
boot drive as Rube and no_one suggested?
