pc speakers reset to desktop speakers on reboot

Many times when I reboot my computer, the PC Speakers
reset to Desktop Speakers from 5.1 Surround Speakers.

How do I prevent this?

Sounds more like a problem with your sound card driver/software. Download and install the
latest Windows XP compatible drivers from the maker...
