PC shuts down randomly

No viruses found. The only clue is in the System log. It tells me that
an error was detected on Device\Harddisk0\D during paging operation. I
found some similar problems when googling for that event. All pointed
to disk fault so I cloned the disk onto another one and everything was
fine for a couple of days. Then I started having the same problem
again. Random reboots and that event in the System log. Any ideas?

Run the harddrive manufacturer's diagnostic on both drives

also run a RAM test

I already run the Microsoft's RAM test on it. I checked the drive with
HDTune.
Manufacturers tests usually won't guarantee wiping the data out so I
would
prefer to avoid them. Especially that HDTune nor check disk did not
find any
errors. I'm starting to suspect the motherboard but probably there is
no way
to test that.

Since you appear to have two disks, you have the opportunity to determine if
this is a hardware or a software problem. Load a vanilla copy of WinXP on
one of your disks. If the crashes persist then it's a hardware problem. The
experts in a hardware newsgroup may then be able to help you.

what you might try is to first
check that you have a page
file on the disk.

you can check via the virtual
memory dialog window via
control panel>system.

if you have a page file and it
is not set to 0 size,

then run a chkdsk /r from the
recovery console.
