went out to the office - noticed one of our Dell PC's was off - turned it on
and during boot it just powered off. I tried several times, - Dell is
running WinXP Pro - the PC is about 18 months old. Took the cover off -
used can air to clean - fans seem to be running fine

any ideas?

Is it turning off before the operating system loads? It is probably a
power supply failure or some other hardware issue, like a short from
one of the drives. Call Dell tech support and have them address this if
you are still under warranty. If you are not, then call a local
computer repair tech to come out and t-shoot for you if you can't
t-shoot hardware yourself.
