pc ownership change

I bought a used laptop with microsoft xp pro. The name of the former owner is
always showing on the top when I use internet explorer or outlook express...
It's a nuisance but that's OK. Yesterday I installed a program and cannot use
it because I have a message :the microsoft jet database engine cannot open
the file, it is already opened exclusively by another user or you need
pemission. How do I get permission, or how do I change the registry to remove
the former owner?
Thanks

You open the registry editor, REGEDIT.EXE and do a search for the previous
owner's name and wherever you find it, replace it with yours.

Change the registered owner here.

Start\Run\type; regedit.msc and hit enter..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOwner and in RegisteredOrganization
type whatever fits: Business, Home user, Private Owner, etc.

Next exit the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
Next check if the previous changes have auto-changed here.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserD
ata\S-1-5-18\Products\437F219108560264A8DFCECCAE91DC2E\InstallProperties =
registered owner and organization

There are a number of other keys where your name (and registered
organization) should be changed for the installed programs to run under your
name.. the number of entries to be changed is according to how many programs
the computer is running, check one or two "InstallProperties" subkeys to
find if the changes were done automatically and if not, you may have to make
the changes manually for every program presently installed, particularly the
program you have recently installed to have it and all other programs run
under your name. Once you have put your name in the first key, all other
programs you intall from now on, will automatically be installed under your
name.

I hope it's clear.

I tried what you said. When I go to control palel/system/ I see my name
instead of the previous owner. But the previous owner's name is still there
on outlouk express or internet.
After restartsing the PC I went where you said tocheck but cannot find
437F219108560264A8DFCECCAE91DC2E\,
Also I went to control panel, administrative tools/computer management and
try to add myself as administrator but cannot because I am not a built in
security principals. When I try my program, I still have the same error
message :the microsoft jet database engine cannot open
the file, it is already opened exclusively by another user or you need
pemission.
thanks for your help

kari; I have enclosed an image so you can find visually where to change the
owner for the installed programs.
The user name shown in Outlook Express is subject to the default mail
account, the previous owner's mail account must still be in the program,
either change the data or delete it and add your own mail account in
Tool\Account\double clic on the mail account and change details or select it
and delete it, then go to add new\mail account, and follow the wizzard's
instructions.
As to Internet Explorer your name should appear after you have created your
own Internet Account...
your may have to create a new connection with your personal details. To
do this go to Start\Run\type; inetwiz and hit enter and follow the wizzard's
instructions. If you do not have the built in administrator password, try
to logon leaving the passwords space blank... if the administrator account
does not appear at the logon screen, press ctrl+alt+del simultaneously
twice firmly and quick. If the administrator account needs a password,
obviously you need to get it from the previous owner.

Hope this helps.
