Still on this page:

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/free_issues/

there are some free issues a person can download in .pdf format.

I'll look them over and decide if it's worth the $24 for a subscription.
Thanks, Mel!

John, you can check it out, but in the long haul, you were right in your
first assesment. It's really just turned into a rag with no real substance.
Unfortunately most computer mags ended up like this. PC magazine, my sister
gave me a subscription as a gift, has very little of use in it, except for
the odd product review, and you can find that stuff on the web. User
experience generally offers a better guideline than the technobabble given
in mags anyway IMO. I can't prove anything here but I often think that the
reviews in PC Mag are slanted to give the edge to the companies that pay
off. The one exception to this, again this is my personal opinion, is
Maximum PC. I've had a subscription to this one for some years and for the
time being will continue to subscribe.

That's my 2p worth anyway.

But isn't that tricky? If we obtained it as freeware and are sharing
that copy with others, i.e., in alt.binaries.freeware, how can that
fall under any of those so-called restrictions??

Never mind the question. I wasn't aware of how PCMag worked. I
benefited from having these apps when they were freeware and being
shared all around. I still have the same ones that I was using in
those days but only ever shared one once, I believe. Anyway, I just
finished reading the whole PCMag thread. Interesting reading. Thanks
for the education.

Read these quotes (from the Cookiecop 2.2 zip file):

IMO there's nothing "tricky" about that. You *cannot* *legally*
*distribute* the apps.

Maybe someone can list similar FREE apps and we will not use these
restricted ware units at all !!

On Sat, 7 May 2005, the word-wise mirrored 'top poster' chose to write:

[PCMag utils]

restricted ware units at all !!

There was a thread last year on that topic. Out of popular interest the
effort to list suitable 'replacements' quickly vanished. You can read a
list of the PCMag utils (accompanied with few alternatives) on the acf
Wiki:

http://www.markcarter.me.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?PCmagUtilities

Better way than your general question would be to ask for the utilities,
you're interested in, one after another. Chances of extensive answers
and multiple choices increase that way, because everybody willingly to
answer has to compile just a little portion of information. (You can
add the information afterwards to the Wiki, if you like... ;-) )

Be sure to check www.pricelesswarehome.org beforehand, too. For commonly
sought after program categories you stand good chances to find a suitable
program, there.

"Similar" apps to programs like "Dupeless" are far inferior IMO.
