pc lockup

PC locks up and ctrl/alt/del does not respond.
Upon shutting off PC it cycles up and then give
message of "Improper shutdown " with suggested bootup
selections.
After selection is made and it appears to bootup the
shut down command works and upon bootup it goes back to
"Improper shutdown" and may not respond for several
attempts.

Any help would be useful

You can't get specific help because you don't give enough information.
You've basically said, "it's broken". Your problem could be caused by
hardware or software. Here are generic troubleshooting steps:

1) scan with current antivirus using updated definitions; 2) remove
spyware with tools such as Spybot S&D (www.security.kolla.de) and/or
Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) - note that it is a good idea to do
virus and spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from running at
startup (see www.blackviper.com for a listing of services). Also, look
in Event Viewer for clues.

For the hardware, first open the computer and run it open, observing all
fans (overheating will cause freezing). Then do a RAM test - I like
Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - and if necessary, continue on to
test the hard drive and motherboard. If you can't do this yourself,
take the machine to a good local computer shop (not a CompUSA or Best
Buy store).

Thanks for the info.
1. did a virus scan
2. did a disk scan
3. checked internals; ie: fans, hot spots, etc
4. checked Event Viewer, found following error:
a. Applications hang: Event ID/(s) 1000/01/02
b. Event System: Event ID 4609
c. VSS: Event ID 8193
Need to research and find out what they all mean.
Also found that my printer had taken a nose dive (from
Event Viewer logs).
Again thanks
John
